Paws Up is a 37,000 acre working Montana ranch. In addition to the over three hundred head of resident elk, you're very likely to see a couple hundred head of stunning Black Angus cows roaming the rolling pastures of the Ranch.

The expansive property is a haven for authentic Montana dude ranch activities like trail riding chuck wagons and cattle drives. You'll also enjoy a vast menu of wilderness adventures of all kinds. We offer fly-fishing on the legendary Blackfoot River (10 miles of which flow through the Ranch), rappelling off cliffs memorialized by Lewis & Clark, 16 stations of sporting clays shooting, whitewater rafting, ATV riding, and a host of programmed activities for kids.

What differentiates Paws Up from a Montana guest ranch is our commitment to luxury. We are Montana's premier luxury ranch resort offering first-class service and luxurious accommodations and amenities. From our private luxury homes and luxury tents to our attentive, anticipatory service, getting away to the wilds of a Montana ranch is no longer about roughing it. The Resort at Paws Up is truly The Last Best Place.

Environmental & Social Practices

Environment

At Paws Up, we engage in many of the familiar practices of conscientious, green resorts in Montana: earth-friendly cleaning products, energy efficient lights, organic bath products and the option for guests to re-use linens. But we don't stop there. We have made some significant environmental commitments including catch-and-release fishing and sustainable farming practices. We believe, with responsible stewardship of the land, we can keep the "Best" in The Last Best Place. Listed below are some of our green initiatives: "Farm to Table" Dining at Pomp and Trough, Employee Transportation Program, Xeriscape Landscaping at All Homes, Re-Use of Existing Buildings, Energy Efficiency - Lighting and Energy Star Appliances Water Conservation, and Voluntary Re-Use of Linens.

Ranch History

Paws Up Ranch is located in the heart of the picturesque Blackfoot Valley, 30 miles northeast of Missoula, in Greenough, Montana. The beginning of the ranch itself dates back to the homesteader days of the late 1800s. The history of the land goes back even farther to the time when the Blackfoot River served as a transportation corridor for Nez Perce, Flathead and Blackfeet Indians; then later on fur trappers, miners and loggers. The Indians called the river "Cokalahishkit" which means "the river of the road to the buffalo."

Captain Meriwether Lewis, the first celebrity known to follow the well-worn Indian trail along the Big Blackfoot, arrived in July of 1806, on his return trip of the famed Lewis & Clark Expedition. Although no paparazzi were on hand to memorialize Captain Lewis's travels through land that would become the future Paws Up, it is believed that he climbed a tall, craggy rock formation in the rushing waters at the confluence of the Blackfoot and Clearwater rivers. From that vantage point, he would have looked forward up the trail that would take him onward to the next leg of his memorable trek.

The Lindbergh Cattle Company took over the ranch in the year 1965. Brothers Land and Jon Lindbergh, sons of the celebrated aviator, owned the property for the next 21 years, longer than any other owners. The year 1997 heralded new owners, Dave and Nadine Lipson, who purchased the ranch that had now expanded to 10,000 deeded acres and 27,000 leased acres. Arriving from Colorado, they brought with them a herd of superior horses, the desire to build a first-class Black Angus seed stock operation, and their beloved ranch name. "Paws Up" was originally inspired by those over friendly, wriggling dogs who greet visitors by putting their paws up in the air while their tails thump the floor a mile a minute.

Your Chef, Sunny Jin

Before becoming The Resort at Paws Up’s executive chef, Sunny Jin’s culinary journey took him around the world, cooking for some of the planet’s finest restaurants—Napa Valley’s French Laundry, Catalonia’s El Bulli and Australia’s Tetsuya’s. While his culinary skills have impressed discriminating palates globally, it’s the American Northwest where he feels most at home. His formative cooking skills developed in Portland, Oregon, at the Western Culinary Institute, where he won the coveted Grand Toque Award as the top culinary student.

But where Jin really earned his cooking chops was at the French Laundry—one of the most lauded restaurants in the Northern Hemisphere. He spent three years working under renowned chefs Thomas Keller and Corey Lee. “We were literally creating new menus every day, learning to really focus. The amazing culture at the French Laundry was so much about the culinary community,” said Jin. Those community contacts and a growing global curiosity took Jin to Australia, and the highest-rated restaurant in the Southern Hemisphere, Tetsuya’s, where he cooked alongside the legendary Tetsuya Wakuda.

“Now I bring my ‘cook locally, cook sustainably’ philosophy to work at Paws Up,” Jin explained. Today, instead of traveling the globe, Jin’s journey of discovery takes him around Montana. He is dedicated to building relationships with the agricultural community, bringing purveyors and guests together at events and of course foraging for the finest local ingredients. “Lots of new exciting ideas occur to me every day in Montana. It’s such an inspiring place, with culinary riches, wild huckleberries, cherries, wild chamomile—even elk, bison and trout,” said Jin.

From the Northwest to California to Australia to Spain and back to the Northwest—Jin’s journey has indeed come full circle, as all that culinary skill descends on the plates of Paws Up in Greenough, Montana.

Booking Policy

A resort fee of 20% will be applied to all fees for lodging and food and beverage charges. No resort fee is applied to wilderness adventures or spa services. The resort fee covers services such as round-trip airport transportation, all on-property transportation (on-demand drivers provided), use of a personal vehicle (for guests staying in homes), concierge services, complimentary Wi-Fi, the Paws Up App and access to the fitness center, unguided activities, and an extensive trail system. The resort is a gratuity free property.

Rates are based on availability, subject to change and are not valid with any other promotion. All reservations are subject to a 60-day cancellation policy. To confirm your reservation, a two-night deposit is required. The remaining balance is due 60 days prior to your arrival. This deposit is refundable, minus a transaction fee equal to 20% of the deposit amount, if canceled at least 60 days prior to your arrival date. Your full deposit amount is nonrefundable for cancellations made within 60 days prior to your arrival. Within 60 days prior to your arrival, no rate adjustments will be made for the cancellation of a portion of your reserved stay or a reduction in the size of your party. Reservations made within 60 days prior to arrival must be 100% prepaid at the time of booking. Because of our small size, cancellations or rescheduling of dates affect us significantly. A last minute cancellation or date change gives us little chance of filling the space due to our remote location. For these reasons we uphold a strict cancellation policy. The Resort at Paws Up highly recommends purchasing trip insurance from your local travel agent or your insurance provider. For reservations of three or more units, a deposit equal to the first two nights of the stay, before tax and resort fees, is required. This deposit is refundable, minus a transaction fee equal to 20% of the deposit amount, if canceled at least 90 days prior to your arrival date. We will collect the remaining balance of the reservation 90 days prior to your arrival and at that time the reservation will become nonrefundable and nontransferable. In the unfortunate event you must cancel your reservation before the 90 days prior to your arrival date, there will be a 20% transaction fee deducted from your deposit amount. If you need to cancel within 90 days of your scheduled arrival, the total dollar amount of your reservation is nonrefundable. Should it be necessary for you to depart earlier or arrive later than your confirmed dates, you will be responsible for the original reserved room nights of your intended stay.

Garnet Ghost Town

Montana’s most intact ghost town was never built to last. Garnet endures along with the spirits of the rugged gold miners and their families who carved a community in the heart of the Garnet Mountain Range at the end of the nineteenth century. In 1898, some 1,000 people knew Garnet as home. The town was a union town, with a strong miners’ union, the Garnet Western Labor Union, negotiating with mine owners for fair pay, working hours and safety rules. The union hall doubled as the town’s dance hall and resonated with dances, theater, harvest festivals and union meetings. But, by 1905, the gold was playing out and only 150 people remained. A raging fire in 1912 and hardships on the home front during World War I sent most of the remaining miners, wives and children packing . Garnet slowly slipped into obscurity, despite a brief renewal of mining in the Great Depression of the 1930s. Today, Garnet’s fame lies not in its gold, but in the rich history of the town and its emblematic hard-scrabble character. Garnet is quite different from the rip-roaring frontier gold-mining towns in Montana such as Bannack and Virginia City with their lawlessness, vigilantes, and extra-legal hangings. The ghosts of Garnet sleep well. For one thing, Garnet was settled three decades after these early placer-mining towns. The gold mines that gave rise to the town of Garnet were hard-rock mines that demanded entrepreneurs with access to industrial equipment. Hundreds of miners brought their families to live at the top of the long, steep grade from the Northern Pacific Railroad stop at Bearmouth. Many businesses thrived on Main Street. More than 50 children attended the school. The men worked hard, without electricity, with only steam engines and hand tools, removing more than 60,000 ounces of gold, 50,000 ounces of silver, and 60,000 ounces of copper before the rich veins of minerals were tapped out. Garnet was mostly left to the memories and the ghosts when the town’s remaining merchant, Frank Davey, died in 1947. The Bureau of Land Management and the Garnet Preservation Association work together to preserve many original buildings, including the stately Wells Hotel, for posterity. Behind the scenes at Garnet, workers stabilize the old buildings to keep them from falling down. The goal is to retain the ghostly nature of the abandoned buildings while preserving the roofs from caving in and the walls from giving away.

Heaven on Earth!

The Resort at Paws Up is truly magical. I had the opportunity to teach yoga for the Adren Zen weekend and had the best time. The staff is incredibly accommodating. Allison Lewis is an awesome event planner and bends over backwards to make sure all of the guests are happy. The food is to die for and chef Ben is so cool! You can horseback ride, ride an ATV, repel down a huge cliff, challenged yourself on an aerial ropes course or hike. You can also relax in your own hot tub, get any spa treatment you'd like, take yoga and zen out. I loved everything about my stay and can't recommend it enough.
