Environmental & Social Practices

Environment

We judge our quality by the strength and length of our relationships. We use resources to the fullest extent, waste nothing and do only what we can do best. As individuals we demand total responsibility from ourselves.

Respecting and protecting our environment is key. Caring for the wildlife and our livestock in ways that improve their lives and improve the health of their population for the future is vitally important.

After a multi-year recovery plan, in 2017 the dream of sharing this treasured area of the country with others became a reality with the opening of our eco-friendly guest ranch and resort.

Community

Most of the Team Members working at Silvies are from the surrounding communities. The economic boast to the area has been vital to the growth of the community.

Silvies is known for conducting fundraisers to benefit specific causes for the local community. In addition, the Gallery Gift Shop at Silvies carries the work of local artists without taking a percentage of their sales.

In addition, there are well-established and expanding working internship programs for students from Oregon State University, including animal and range science, wildlife, fisheries, hotel and restaurant management, turf grass and other areas of the ranch operations.

Conservation

The Recovery Plan at Silvies included the acquisition and development of more and better habitat for wildlife, livestock and ranching techniques.

Over 50-miles of stream restoration occurred which created rich soil in our meadows and brought an abundance of healthy wildlife back to the Ranch. Rivers and streams are restocked. All real estate is run by solar power.

Ranch History

The first homes in the Silvies Valley were built about 6000 B.C. by newly-arrived Native Americans.

Fast-forward to 1883 when Silvies Valley Ranch was homesteaded and the first water rights patented. Eventually, 70 families occupied the valley with the Hankins and Craddock families becoming dominant.

Two of our championship golf course are named after the families with the homesteads being preserved. Horses, hogs, sheep, cattle, hay, lumber, rye (for whiskey) and crabapples were some of the products raised in the valley.

In 2007, the Silvies Valley Ranch (which had been renamed the Ponderosa Ranch) was purchased by Silvies Valley Ranch L.L.C., a private company founded by the Campbell family – a family with pioneer roots in Eastern Oregon. The name of the ranch was immediately returned to its historic name of Silvies Valley Ranch.

Today, the Ranch is made up of 150,000 acres. Of the 60 square miles of deeded property, there are over 6,000 acres of mountain meadows, 14,000 acres of Ponderosa Pine forest, 20 miles of Silvies River, over 20 creeks, our own special cattle (5,000) and American Range Goats (4,000) and an abundance of wildlife.
